India’s Drug Standards Gain Global Recognition, Rise From 123rd to 8th Position
New Delhi: India’s pharmaceutical regulatory standards have seen a major global upgrade, with the country moving from 123rd to 8th position worldwide, according to a statement by the Union Health Minister.
The improvement reflects growing international confidence in India’s drug quality systems, inspection mechanisms, and regulatory enforcement at a time when India remains one of the world’s largest suppliers of generic medicines.
Officials said the jump in rankings is the result of system wide reforms in the drug regulatory framework, including stronger inspection protocols, digitisation of approvals and compliance processes, and tighter monitoring of manufacturing facilities.
India currently supplies medicines to more than 200 countries, making the credibility of its drug standards critical not just for domestic healthcare but also for global public health systems, particularly in emerging and developing economies.
Over the past few years, India’s drug regulatory system has undergone significant upgrades, including risk based inspections, increased frequency of audits, and closer alignment with global best practices followed by advanced regulatory authorities.
The improved global ranking is expected to strengthen India’s pharmaceutical exports by improving trust among international regulators, buyers, and healthcare systems, while also reducing regulatory barriers for Indian manufacturers entering new markets.
Industry observers say the recognition reinforces India’s position as a reliable global supplier of affordable medicines, at a time when drug quality, safety, and supply chain resilience are under heightened scrutiny worldwide.
The development also aligns with India’s broader push to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing standards and expand its role in the global healthcare supply chain.
